Charging adapters are free for owners of Kia EVs.

Following its statement in October 2023 that it will implement North American Charging Standard charge ports across its electric car fleet, Kia has now provided additional information on the logistics of adapters for owners of its EV6, EV9, and Niro EVs. The important news is that if you recently purchased or plan to purchase one, you will receive a free NACS adapter.

The NACS charging port and companion plug were developed by Tesla (though its legal name is SAE J3400), but its widespread acceptance by the car industry over the last two years has been nearly complete thanks to Tesla's decision to open up its Supercharger network. Vehicles with existing Combined Charging System connectors can now use Tesla chargers.

This is how it works for Kia: Customers who order a new 2024 or 2025 EV9 or 2024 EV6 after September 4 will receive a complimentary adapter from the brand, granting access to over 16,500 NACS DC fast chargers. The adapters are planned to be delivered in early 2025. EV6, EV9, and Niro EV customers who took delivery before Sept. 4 will have the opportunity to purchase an adapter from a Kia dealer at a later date. Access to the DC fast chargers is planned for Jan. 15, 2025.

Furthermore, Kia adds that once a car software patch is done, EV owners will be able to access and pay for charging via the Kia Access app in early 2025. Over-the-air updates may be possible for this, although Kia states that model-year 2019-24 Niro EV software updates must be completed through a dealer.
